Volunteering in the orphanage is a unique opportunity to experience the rewards of assisting vulnerable children. Disease, the high mortality rate for mothers during childbirth, as well as short life expectancy in Nepal leave thousands of children without parents every year. As a result, most of these children are deprived of education and have to find work in restaurants, hotels, and factories where they work long hours for very low wages.
Homes like Ramro Sathi provide these children with a bed, three meals a day, and opportunities to further their education, pursue extracurricular interests, and interact with people from all over Nepal and the world. However, they also need attention, care, and love. This is why your help as a committed volunteer can make such a vital contribution to these young lives. Ramro Sathi aims to not only allow these children to survive, but to create an environment where they can thrive, grow mentally, and develop socially.
As a volunteer at Ramro Sathi, you will be placed either in the home or at a guesthouse/hotel, depending on your preference or the availability of accommodation at Ramro Sathi. You will spend most of your time with the children assisting them with their day to day routines; in your free time, you can explore the vast city of Kathmandu and experience the stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage Nepal is famous for.
The children are usually between the ages of six and eighteen and will have a basic (for the youngest ones) to near-fluent (for the older ones) understanding of English. Your role as a volunteer is to care for and encourage the children as well as help them with their schoolwork. You will act as a mentor and friend, teaching them general life skills including good work and study habits, healthy living, and personal hygiene. There will also be opportunities for you to organize outings, play games, or arrange informal classes in music, painting, singing, dancing, sports, and all the other activities that children enjoy.
A typical day at the children's home looks as follows:
Assist with breakfast and getting the children off to school in the morning
Help out with organizing and cleaning up the house
Aid the children with their homework and studying before and after school
Play with the children - games, reading books, educational activities, etc.
Assist with dinner and getting the children to bed
We welcome volunteers who could preferably spend at least one month with the children, so that they can get to know you and you can get to know them.
Food: Twice a day Dal Bhat with tarkari (Nepali meal of rice, lentils, and curry). Snacks and fruits once a day also included.
Accommodation: We can provide accommodation either at the house (included) or in a local hotel or guesthouse (additional cost).
Cost : All the expenses for being a volunteer are to be funded by the volunteer. Costs for being a volunteer are listed below:
First week = $100 USD (per person)
Each additional week is $75 USD (per person)
Note: The above cost for volunteers includes food and accommodation during your stay with us. The orphanage has clean drinking water, wifi on the volunteers’ floor, and basic laundry facilities. Also included is airport pick up and drop off. The volunteer does not have to pay for accommodation at the orphanage while they are away enjoying tourist and trekking activities.
